Robert Jacobus, history
teacher for over two decades and author of Houston
Cougars in the 1960s: Death Threats, the Veer Offense, and the Game of the
Century, will come to the Carver Library to discuss and sign copies of his
book. In 1968, the Houston Cougars upset
the UCLA Bruins, ending a 47-game winning streak. This defeat was dubbed the “Game of the
Century,” and was owed in large part to two young black men who were recruited
by the team from Louisiana in 1964, Don Chaney and Elvin Hayes. These players led the team to 32 straight
victories in the face of racially-motivated hostility. In Jacobus’ book, you’ll find first-hand
accounts from players, coaches, and others who aided integration of collegiate
sports in Houston, promoting racial equality in the South as a whole.
