African American Women Veterans

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Event Details

Too often minority participation has been ignored or downplayed in history, especially in accounts of war and consistently concerning black women. Contrary to popular knowledge, African Americans were essential to the war effort both in World War I and World War II and black women’s collective military histories form a sizable chunk of America’s past.

In fact, African-American women have played a role in every war effort in United States history and participated in spite of racial and gender discrimination.  Today, Black women represent a third of all women in the armed forces and are enlisting in the military at far higher rates than their white or Hispanic women counterparts.

Learn about these brave women’s untold triumphs at the Eden Park Library on Wednesday, November 2, at 4:30 pm where, in honor of Veteran’s Day, members of the Women Veterans of Louisiana will present a program highlighting the role of African American women serving in the military.
