Books and Music: "Lift Every Voice and Sing", by James Weldon and John Rosamond Johnson
Have you ever created a song? Some songs have such powerful messages that they become famous. In the year 1900, in a segregated school in Florida, 500 African American children sang a new song to celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday. It was called “Lift Every Voice and Sing”. Today, we know it as the Black National Anthem. Come to the library and learn about the two brothers who wrote the words and music. Sing along with illustrated books and study the beautiful poetry! Create your own moves! As an added bonus, we will do the “Rhythm Stick Dance” with some percussion instruments. Ages 5 to 11. Registration is required.
